Francis Bacon essays – Of Studies – Explanation

First Stanza

“Studies serve for delight, for ornament and for
ability. Their chief use for delight, is in privateness
and retiring; for ornament, is in discourse; and for
ability, is in the judgement and disposition of
business. For expert men can execute and perhaps
judge of particulars, one by one : but the general
counsels, and the plots and marshalling of affairs
come best from those that are learned.”

Reference : These lines have been taken from the essay ‘Of Studies’ written by the father of the essays’ Sir Francis Bacon.

Context: In this essay the author discusses the significance of studies in human life.

Explanation : He says that studies have three fold functions to perform. They give delight and satisfaction. Studies also help in imparting beauty to the conversation. Lastly, the studies give ability and wisdom to perform his duty in a good way. Learned persons are balanced and systematic in their opinions and so they judge well before taking any action.

Critical Comments : Bacon’s essays are a fine example of Aphorism. Here also he has employed this device with great excellence.

सन्दर्भ-प्रस्तुत पंक्तियाँ सर फ्रांसिस बेकन द्वारा लिखित Of Studies नामक निबन्ध से अवतरित हैं।

प्रसंग-प्रस्तुत निबन्ध में लेखक अध्ययन के लाभों का वर्णन करता है।

व्याख्या-लेखक कहता है कि अध्ययन तिगुना लाभ दिखाता है। अध्ययन से व्यक्ति को आनन्द एवं सन्तोष की प्राप्ति होती है। अध्ययन वार्तालाप में सौन्दर्य की अभिव्यक्ति भी करता है। अन्तत: अध्ययन व्यक्ति को उसके कार्यों को उचित प्रकार से करने की योग्यता तथा बुद्धिमानी प्रदान करता है। विद्वान् व्यक्ति एक सन्तुलित व आदर्श दृष्टिकोण रखता है। इसलिए वह किसी कार्य को करने से पूर्व ठीक प्रकार से निर्णय लेकर कार्य करता है।

आलोचनात्मक तथ्य-बेकन के निबन्ध Aphorism के अनूठे उदाहरण हैं। इस निबन्ध में भी उसने इसी विधा का अनुपम प्रयोग किया है।

Second Stanza

“To spend too much time in studies, is sloth; to use
them too much for ornament, is affectation; to make
judgement wholly by their rules, is the humour of a
scholar: they perfect nature, and are perfected by
experience : for natural abilities are like natural
plants, that need pruning. by study, and studies
themselves do give forth directions too much at large,
except they be bounded in by experience.”

Explanation : Here the writer says that too much use of studies shows the laziness of the concerned scholar. If a person uses them too much for beautifying his conversation shows his caprice of making a show of his learning and if the person takes any decision entirely on the basis of theoretical learning without considering the practical aspects, it shows the whim of a scholar. Studies develop natural abilities and they themselves are perfected by experience because they are like natural plants as the trimming of plants and trees help them to grow healthily, similarly good experience develops the benefit of studies. Experience is also needed because the guidance provided by studies is not exact but vogue and general. They can be properly used only with the help of experience.

Critical Comment : Figure of speech Simile has been used in these lines. .

व्याख्या-लेखक कहता है कि अध्ययन में ज्यादा समय नष्ट करना व्यक्ति को आलसी बनाता है। और यदि व्यक्ति अध्ययन का प्रयोग अपने वार्तालाप को सौन्दर्ययुक्त बनाने में करता है तो यह उसकी दिखावे की मनोवृत्ति को प्रकट करता है। यदि व्यक्ति प्रत्येक निर्णय केवल सैद्धान्तिक आधार पर करता है तथा व्यावहारिक पक्ष को नहीं देखता तो यह उसकी सनक को प्रकट करता है। अध्ययन व्यक्ति की योग्यताओं को बढ़ाता है तथा खुद को अनुभव के द्वारा पोषित करना चाहिए क्योंकि योग्यताएँ छोटे पौधों के समान होती हैं जिन्हें पल्लवित करने के लिए सिंचाई तथा कटिंग की आवश्यकता होती है। वास्तव में अध्ययन अनुभव द्वारा पूर्ण होता है। पुस्तकीय ज्ञान के उचित उपयोग के लिए जीवन का अनुभव आवश्यक है। अनुभव की आवश्यकता इसलिए होती है क्योंकि अध्ययन से प्राप्त निर्देश सटीक नहीं होते बल्कि अस्पष्ट एवं सामान्य होते हैं। उनको केवल अनुभव द्वारा ही उचित रूप से प्रयोग किया जा सकता है।

आलोचनात्मक तथ्य-उपमा अलंकार का प्रयोग किया गया है।
