INTRODUCTION
In ‘Going Places’ the narrator A.R. Barton presents a school going girl Sophie. She is an incurable day-dreamer and escapist. She dreams of big and beautiful things far beyond her reach and means. She dreams of having a boutique, becoming an actress and a fashion designer. She considers the young Irish footballer, Danny Casey as her hero. She is always lost in his dreams. She knows she can’t get him. It makes her sad and despondent. All the dreams and disappointments of Sophie are the creations of her own mind.
1. Sophie and Jansie-Classmates and Friends
Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends. But they were poles apart in thinking and temperament. Sophie was a day-dreamer. She always dreamt of big and beautiful things which were beyond her means. She wanted to have a boutique. She also entertained the idea of becoming an actress and a fashion designer. Jansie was realistic and practical. She knew that both of them belonged to lower middle class families. Their families were not rich. Big plans needed big money and experience which they didn’t have. She knew that both of them were ‘earmarked for the biscuit factory’.
2. Geoff-First to Share Sophie’s Secrets
Geoff was Sophie’s elder brother. He was three years out of school. He was an apprentice mechanic. He travelled to his work each day to the far side of the city. He was a man of few words. Words had to be prized out of him. Sophie was jealous of his silence. She wished that she would share all her experiences with him. She knew that her brother Geoff was always the first to share her secrets.
3. Sophie Narrates Her Imaginary Meeting with Danny Casey
Sophie told. Geoff that she met Danny Casey, the wonder-boy of football in the arcade. Geoff looked round abruptly in disbelief. She told that she was looking at the clothes in Royce’s window. Danny Casey came and stood beside her. Geoff couldn’t believe her. He asked her how he looked like. Sophie invented the details. She told that Casey had green and gentle eyes. He was not so tall, as she had thought, Geoff gave this news to his father. Sophie’s father turned his head in disbelief. His expression was one of disdain. Her father ignored Sophie. He went on to talk about Tom Finny and Danny Casey. He liked the Irish genius and wished that he would be a great footballer one day. When Sophie tried to talk about her meeting with Casey, her father ridiculed and snubbed her. He called it another of her wild stories”.
4. Geoff Reasons with (his sister) Sophie
Geoff was not convinced that Sophie met Danny Casey. But he was a patient listener to her story. He was always the first to share her secrets. But he cautioned her that Casey was a celebrity. He must have ‘strings of girls’ like her running after him. Sophie defended Casey. She told that she herself spoke first to Casey. She recognised him by his accent that she had often heard on the television. He seemed lonely. She couldn’t take his autograph as neither of them had any paper or pen. He would give her an autograph if she cared to meet him next week. Geoff doubted if “he would ever show up”.
5. The Family Goes to Watch Casey in Action
All the members of Sophie’s family were football fans. Her father, particularly was a great fan of Danny Casey. Geoff and little Derek too liked him. Sophie was mad after him and he was her personal hero. On Saturday they made their ‘weekly pilgrimage’ to watch Danny Casey in person. Casey played for United. United won by two-nil and Casey scored the second goal. Sophie’s father cried in joy. Sophie glowed in pride.
6. Jansie Comes to know of Sophie’s Story
Jansie came to know about the story of Sophie’s meeting with Danny Casey. She came to enquire if it was true. She was not prepared to believe it. Sophie cursed Geoff. It was a secret only to be shared between her and Geoff. It was ‘not a Jansie thing’. Jansie was ‘nosey’. She was always prepared to know new things about others. Sophie feared that Jansie would spread the news in the whole neighbourhood. But Jansie promised to keep the secret only to herself.
7. Sophie Sat Alone Dreaming of Danny Casey
After dark Sophie walked by the canal, along a sheltered path. It was far from the noise and crowd of the city. Sophie used to visit the place often when she was a child. She sat on a wooden bench beneath a solitary elm tree. She imagined Casey’s coming towards her. But imagination and reality were two different things. Danny Casey didn’t come. Sophie knew that he wouldn’t come. She became sad and despondent.
8. Sophie’s Dreams and Disappointments All in Her Mind
Sophie’s dreams and disappointments were all in her mind. They were not real. She was a day-dreamer having no link with the world of reality. She dreamt of big and beautiful things. She didn’t have the means to achieve them. She considered the Irish prodigy, Danny Casey, her hero. She took a deep pleasure in being lost in his dreams. But empty dreaming ultimately made her sad. She was disappointed to realise that Danny Casey would never come to meet her. But she was an incurable dreamer and escapist. All her dreams and disappointments were the products of her own mind.

3. Sophie, Danny Casey से हुई अपनी काल्पनिक मुलाकात सुनाती है
Sophie ने Geoff को बताया कि वह फुटबालक आश्चर्य युवा Danny Casey से आच्छादित मार्ग में मिली थी। Geoff ने अचानक अविश्वास से चारों ओर देखा। उसने बताया कि वह Royce’s की window में कपड़ों को देख रही थी। Danny Casey आया और उसके साथ आकर खड़ा हो गया। Geoff उस पर विश्वास नहीं कर पाया। उसने उसे पूछा कि वह कम a दिखायी देता था। Sophie ने सूक्ष्मताओं का आविष्कार कर लिया। उसने बताया कि Casey की हरी और उम्दा आँखें थी। वह उतना ऊँचा नहीं था जितना उसने सोचा था। Geoff ने यह खबर अपने पिता को सुनायी। उसने अविश्वास में अपना सिर मोड लिया। उसका भाव घृणा का था। उसने Sophie की परवाह नहीं की। वह Tom Finny और Danny Casey के बारे में बाते करता रहा। वह उस Irish प्रतिभा को पसंद करता था और कामना करता था कि एक दिन वह एक महान फुटबाल खिलाडी बनेगा। जब Sophie ने Casey के साथ अपनी मुलाकात के बारे में बताना चाहा तो उसके पिता ने उपहासपूर्ण तरीके से उसे झिड़क दिया। उसने इसे उसकी एक और काल्पनिक कहानी’ की संज्ञा दी।

Geoff इस बात से संतुष्ट नहीं था कि Sophie, Danny Casey से मिली थी। लेकिन वह उसकी कहानी को चुप-चाप सुनने वाला था। वह सदा ही उसके रहस्यों में सबसे पहले भागीदारी करता था। लेकिन उसने उसे चेताया कि Casey एक नामी हस्ती है। उस जैसी ढेरों लड़कियाँ उसके पीछे चक्कर लगा रही होंगी। ‘Sophie ने Casey का बचाव किया। उसने बताया कि वह स्वयं Casey से पहले बोली थी। उसने उसको उसके उच्चारण से जो उसने अक्सर टेलीविज़न पर सुना था, पहचान लिया। वह अकेला प्रतीत होता था। वह उसका ऑटोग्राफ नहीं ले पायी क्योंकि दोनों में से किसी के पास भी कागज या पैन नहीं था। जब उसे अगले हफ्ते उससे मिलने की फुर्सत मिलेगी तो वह उसे अपना ऑटोग्राफ दे देगा। Geoff को संदेह था कि वह कभी आएगा कि नहीं।
5. परिवार Casey को खेलते देखने जाता है
Sophie के परिवार के सारे सदस्य फुटबाल के दीवाने था उसका पिता, विशेष रूप से Danny Casey का दीवाना था। Geoff और छोटा Derek भी उसे पसंद करते थे। Sophie उसके पीछे पागल थी और वह उसका व्यक्तिगत नायक था। शनिवार को उन्होंने Danny Casey को आमने-सामने देखने के लिए अपनी साप्ताहिक धार्मिक यात्रा की। Casey United के लिए खेलता था। United 2-0 से जीत गयी और दूसरा Casey ने ही किया था। Sophie के पिता खुशी से चीख उठे। Sophie गर्व से चमक उठी।

Jansie को Sophie के Danny Casey से मिलने की कहानी का पता चल गया था। वह यह पता करने आयी कि क्या वह सच थी। वह इस पर विश्वास करने के लिए तैयार नहीं थी। Sophie ने Geoff को कोसा। यह एक रहस्य था जिसे सिर्फ उसके और Geoff के बीच बाँटना था। यह ‘चीज’ Jansie के लिए नहीं थी। Jansie को ‘सूघने’ की आदत थी। वह सदा दूसरों के बारे में नयी चीजों को जानने के लिए तैयार रहती थी। Sophie को डर था कि Jansie इस खबर को सारे पड़ोस में फैला देगी। लेकिन Jansie ने रहस्य को सिर्फ अपने तक सीमित रखने का वायदा किया।
7. Sophie का अलग बैठकर Danny Casey के सपने लेना
अंधेरा होने के बाद नहर के साथ-साथ एक ढके हुए रास्ते पर Sophie चली जा रही थी। वह शहर के शोर और भीड़ से दूर था। Sophie उस स्थान पर जब वह बच्ची थी प्राय: आया करती थी। वह इकलौते Elm वृक्ष के नीचे लकड़ी के बैंच पर बैठ गयी। उसने Casey के उसकी तरफ आते हुए की कल्पना की। लेकिन कल्पना और यथार्थ दो अलग चीजें थीं। Danny Casey नहीं आया। Sophie जानती थी कि वह नहीं आएगा। वह उदास और निराश हो गयी।
8. Sophie के सपने और निराशा सभी उसके दिमाग में
Sophie के सपने और निराशा सभी उसके दिमाग में थे। वे यथार्थ नहीं थे। वह दिन में सपने लेने वाली थी जिसका यथार्थ से कोई सम्बंध नहीं था। वह बड़ी और सुन्दर चीजों का सपना लेती थी। उसके पास उन्हें प्राप्त करने के साधन नहीं थे। वह Irish चमत्कार Danny Casey को अपना नायक (hero) मानती थी। उसे उसके सपनों में खोये रहने से गहरा आनन्द प्राप्त होता था। लेकिन खाली सपनों ने अन्त में उसे उदास बना दिया। वह यह महसूस करके निराश हुई कि Danny Casey कभी उससे मिलने नहीं आयेगा। लेकिन वह एक लाइलाज सपने लेने वाली और पलायनवादी थी। उसके सभी सपने और निराशाएँ उसी के अपने दिमाग की उपज थीं।
