The Last Lesson Summary in English
Introduction
A Daudet’s short story. ‘The Last Lesson’ is set in the day of the Franco-Prussian War (1870-1871). Germany (Prussian) occupied two French districts of Alsace and Lorraine. By an order from Berlin, German language was Imposed on the French speaking people of Alsace and Lorraine. The story highlights the dismay and distress of M. Hamal, his students and the villagers, caused by that order from Berlin
1. Late for School
The narrator (Franz) started for school very late that morning. He feared his class-teacher, M. Hamel. He would question the students on participles. The narrator didn’t know even the first word about them. He feared a scolding. He thought of running away and spending the day out of doors. The weather was very warm and bright. On his second thought, he decided otherwise. He hurried off to school.
2. Crowd in Front of the Bulletin-board
As Franz walked past the town-hall, he saw a big crowd in front of the bulletin board. For the last two years all the bad news had come from there. The people got the news of the lost battles and other important information only from there.
3. Unusual Calm at School
Usually, when the school began there was a lot of hustle and bustle. The opening and closing of desks and lessons orally repeated loudly in unison, created a lot of commotion. But now it was all so still, He could depend on the commotion to get to his desk without being noticed. But how he went in before everybody, He blushed and was quite frightened. But nothing happened. No punishment. M. Hamel saw and asked him very kindly to take his seat.
4. The Last Lesson
M. Hamel was in formal clothes that he were only on inspection and prize days. The whole school seemed quite strange and silent. The most surprising thing was the presence of the village elders. They were sitting quietly on the back benches. M. Hamel mounted his chair and spoke in a grave and gentle tone, “My children, this is the last lesson I shall give you.” He told them that an order had come from Berlin. Only German would be taught in the schools of Alsace. The new master would join the next day. It was their last lesson in French. He wanted them to be very attentive.
5. Sudden Love for French
The narrator felt sorry for not learning his lessons in French. He never liked his books. He didn’t have any interest in grammar and history. But now he developed a fascination for them. Even he started liking M. Hamel. The idea that he would not teach them any more, made Franz forget all about his ruler. He even forgot how cranky his teacher was. Now it was his turn to recite. But he got mixed up and confused. M. Hamel didn’t scold him.
6. M. Hamel Glorifies French
M. Hamel showed his concern that people of Alsace generally gave no importance to French. They put off learning their own native language. Franz was not the only exception. Many others were also guilty on this count. He declared that French language was the most beautiful language in the world. It was the clearest and most logical. They must guard it among themselves and never forget it. It appeared that M. Hamel wanted to give them all he knew before going away.
7. “Vive La France !” (“Long Live France !”)
All at once the church-clock struck twelve. The trumpets of the Prussian soldiers sounded under their windows. M. Hamel stood up, very pale, in his chair. He tried to speak but something choked him. He couldn’t speak. Then he turned to the blackboard. He took a piece of chalk and wrote as large as he could : “Vive La France !” (Long Live France !”)
Then without a word, he made a gesture to them with his hand : “School is dismissed- you may go.
The Last Lesson Summary in Hindi
1. पाठशाला के लिए देरी
कथाकार (Franz) उस सुबह पाठशाला के लिए काफी देरी से चला। वह अपने कक्षाध्यापक, M. Hamel से डरता था। वे विद्यार्थियों से participles (कृदन्तों) के बारे में प्रश्न करने वाले थे। कथाकार को उनके बारे में पहले अक्षर का भी पता नहीं था। वह झिड़की खाने से डर रहा था। उसने दूर भागने और दिन को बाहर बिताने के बारे में विचार किया। मौसम काफी गर्म और चटकीला था। लेकिन फिर विचारने पर उसने दूसरा ही फैसला किया। वह जल्दी ही पाठशाला चला गया।
2. बुलेटिन-बोर्ड के सामने भीड़
जैसे Franz टाउन हाल के सामने से गुजरा, उसने बुलेटिन बोर्ड के सामने बड़ी भीड़ देखी। पिछले दो सालों से सारी बुरी खबरें वहीं से आयी थीं। लोगों को हारी हुई लड़ाइयों की खबरें और दूसरी महत्त्वपूर्ण सूचना केवल वहीं से मिलती थीं।
3. पाठशाला में असाधारण शांति
प्रायः जब पाठशाला शुरू होती थी तो काफी शोर शराबा होता था। डैस्कों के खुलने और बंद होने और पाठों के जबानी एक साथ-दोहराये जाने से काफी हलचल पैदा होती थी। लेकिन अब शांत था। वह बिना दिखायी पड़े अपने डैस्क तक पहुँचने के लिए उस (हर रोज होने वाली) हलचल पर निर्भर था। लेकिन अब वह सभी के सामने अन्दर गया। वह शर्म से लाल हो गया। काफी डरा हुआ भी था। लेकिन कुछ भी नहीं हुआ। कोई भी सजा नहीं। M. Hamel ने उसे देखा और बहुत विनम्रता से उसे अपनी और सीट लेने के लिए कहा।
4. आखिरी पाठ
M. Hamel उन औपचारिक कपड़ों में था जो वह निरीक्षण और पुरस्कार दिवसों पर ही पहनता था। सारी पाठशाला बहुत विचित्र और शांत प्रतीत होती थी। लेकिन सबसे अधिक हैरान करने वाली चीज थी गाँव वाले बुजुर्गों की उपस्थिति। वे पिछले बैंचों पर शांत रूप से बैठे थे। M. Hamel अपनी कुर्सी पर चढ़ा और उसने गम्भीर और विनम्र आवाज में बोलना शुरू किया : “मेरे बच्चो ! यह आखिरी पाठ है जो मैं तुम्हें पढ़ाऊँगा।” उसने उन्हें बताया कि बर्लिन से एक आदेश आया है। Alsace के स्कूलों में केवल जर्मन भाषा पढ़ाई जाएगी। नया शिक्षक अगले दिन आ जायेगा। वह फ्रेंच (भाषा) का उनका आखिरी पाठ था। वह चाहता था कि वे (उस पर) पूरा ध्यान दें।
5. फ्रेंच (भाषा) के प्रति अचानक (उमड़ा) प्रेम
कथाकार को फ्रेंच में अपने पाठों को न सीखने पर अफसोस हुआ। उसे अपनी पुस्तकें कभी पसंद नहीं आयीं। उसे व्याकरण और इतिहास में कभी रुचि नहीं थी। लेकिन अब उसका उनके प्रति आकर्षण बढ़ गया था। वह M. Hamel को भी पसंद करने लगा था। इस विचार से कि वह उन्हें फिर और नहीं पढ़ाएगा, Franz उसके डण्डे के बारे में भी सब कुछ भूल गया। वह यह भी भूल गया कि उसका अध्यापक कितना सनकी था। अब उसके सुनाने की बारी थी। लेकिन वह गड़बड़ा गया और परेशान हो गया। M. Hamel ने उसे लताड़ा नहीं।
6. M. Hamel द्वारा फ्रेंच भाषा का महिमामंडन
M. Hamel ने चिंता जताई कि Alsace के लोग अक्सर फ्रेंच भाषा को कोई महत्त्व नहीं देते। वे अपनी देशी भाषा को सीखना टालते रहते हैं। Franz ही केवल मात्र अपवाद नहीं था। बहुत से अन्य लोग भी इस बात के लिए अपराधी थे। उसने घोषणा की कि फ्रेंच भाषा संसार की सबसे सुन्दर भाषा है। यह सबसे अधिक स्पष्ट और सर्वाधिक तर्कपूर्ण है। उन्हें इसे अपने अन्दर बचाव रखना चाहिए और इसे कभी भी नहीं भुलाना चाहिए। ऐसा प्रतीत होता था जैसे जाने से पहले M. Hamel उन्हें सब कुछ जो वह जानता था दे देना चाहता था।
7. “फ्रांस अमर रहे !”
अचानक गिरजाघर की घड़ी ने 12 बजाए। उनकी खिड़कियों 1 के नीचे प्रशिया (जर्मन) के सिपाहियों की तुरहियों की आवाज – सुनायी पड़ी। M. Hamel बहुत पीला पड़ गया (और) अपनी. कुर्सी पर खड़ा हो गया। उसने बोलने का प्रयत्न किया परन्तु किसी चीज ने उसे अवरुद्ध कर दिया। वह बोल नहीं सका। फिर वह ब्लैकबोर्ड की ओर मुड़ा। उसने चाक का एक टुकड़ा लिया और जितना बड़ा लिख सकता था लिखा : “फ्रांस अमर रहे। फिर बिना कोई शब्द कहे उसने उनकी ओर अपने हाथ से इशारा करते हुए (कहा) “स्कूल को भंग किया जाता है-आप जा सकते हैं।
