Tight Corners By E.V. Lucas Summary – Some friends were talking of difficult situations in which they had once fallen. They were narrating their experiences of tight corners when they could not decide what to do and as such faced mental agony.
Once a person, instigated by his friend, went into a sale-room of the Christie’s where paintings where sold by auction. He had no money, but still he thought of enjoying the fun. He saw that bidding started from low figures and gradually rose up to high. He therefore, just out of fun, thought to bid for a painting and back out as the bidding rose higher. But to his bad luck the picture for which he quoted his price-four thousand fifty guineas – had few takers. No body come forward with a higher price and so, the auction price fell on him. He had to pay this heavy amount and take the painting home. But he had no money. Thus he was placed in a very tight corner and suffered a great deal of mental agony. His friend disappeared obviously to save his face. He recalled in his mind the name of his other friends and relatives from whom he could borrow money but was not sure that they would give him money. He thought of some money lenders but about them too he was not very sure. He could not decide what to do and how to emerge out of this difficult situation.
But when there seems to be no let-up help comes from God. This often happens in case of good and honest people. Here too the same thing happened. A man sent him message that he was willing to pay him his extra fifty guineas and was interested to take the painting himself. It was not only a great respite but also extra monetary gain. But see the strange nature of man. How greedy he sometimes becomes! he replied that he would accept a hundred guineas to give up his claim of the painting in his favour. The other man agreed and he got a hundred guineas for nothing. In this way the tight corner proved a blessing in disguise for him.

हिन्दी साराँश- कुछ मित्र अपने जीवन में आई हुई विषम परिस्थितियों का वर्णन कर रहे थे जिसमें वे कह सकते थे कि “हम ऐसी स्थिति में बुरे फंसे”। लेखक कहता है कि सबसे विषम परिस्थिति वह होती है जिसमें व्यक्ति को सर्वाधिक मानसिक जलालत झेलनी पड़ती है।
ऐसी ही एक विषम परिस्थति का यहाँ वर्णन किया जाता है। एक व्यक्ति अपने विदेशी मित्र के कहने पर “क्रिस्टाज’ के विक्रय हाल में पहुँचता है। जहाँ चित्रों की नीलामी प्रक्रिया से विक्रय हो रहा था। नीलामकर्ता बारी-बारी से एक-एक चित्र उठाता और उस पर बोली लगवाता। बोली पहले कम मूल्य से आरम्भ होती है, फिर धीरे-धीरे काफी ऊँचे दर पर समाप्त होती। यह व्यक्ति भी मजा लेने के लिए बोली में शामिल हो गया। एक चित्र की पहली बोली 4000 गिनी लगाई गई। इस व्यक्ति ने अपनी ओर से पचास गिनी बोली बढ़ा दी उसने सोचा था कि आगे की बोली में वह हिस्सा नहीं लेगा। परन्तु उसके दुर्भाग्य से किसी व्यक्ति ने उसके आगे बोली नहीं लगाई। अत: अब वह चित्र 4050 गिनी उसके गले आ पड़ा। उसके पास पैसा नहीं था। अत: वह बुरा फंसा। ऐसी विषम परिस्थिति में उसका मित्र चुपचाप खिसक गया। अब यह व्यक्ति अपने रिश्तेदारों और मित्रों का नाम स्मरण करने लगा जिनसे वह अपना धन उधार ले सकता था। परन्तु विश्वास नहीं था कि वे धन देंगे। फिर उसने महाजनों से ऋण लेने की सोची परन्तु ऐसा कोई महाजन भी ध्यान में नहीं आया। उसकी मानसिक चिन्ता बढ़ने लगी। उसके मन में आया कि क्यों न आगे बढ़कर वह अपनी असली स्थिति बयान कर दे। परन्तु इसमें बदनामी थी।
ऐसे ही समय सज्जनों को ईश्वरीय मदद मिलती है। उसे भी मिली। एक व्यक्ति सन्देश भिजवाया कि वह उस चित्र को लेना चाहता है और उसे अधिक बोली बोलने के 50 गिनी देना चाहता था। यह उस बुरे फंसे व्यक्ति के लिए सचमुच ईश्वरीय सहायता थी। परन्तु मनुष्य का स्वभाव तो देखिए कि वह कितना लालची हो जाता है। उस बुरे फंसे व्यक्ति को जब अपने मुक्ति का रास्ता मिल गया तो उसने और लाभ कमाने की सोची। उसने कहा कि वह उस चित्र पर से अपना दावा छोड़ने के लिए 100 गिनी से कम नहीं लेगा। सौदा पट गया और वह व्यक्ति न केवल बुरी परिस्थिति से उबरा बल्कि आर्थिक लाभ में भी रहा।
