Francis Bacon essays – Of Studies – Explanation -3rd and 4th Stanzas

Third Stanza

“Crafty men condemn studies, simple men admire
them, and wise men use them; for they teach not their
own use: but that is a wisdom without them and
above them; won by observation.”

Reference to the Context: These lines occur in Sir Francis Bacon’s enlightening essay ‘Of Studies’. Here the writer describes different attitude of different persons regarding studies.

Explanation : Bacon says that there are various kinds of persons, Funning persons look down upon studies because in their opinion the knowledge obtained through them is impractical and hence useless for them. The foolish persons always have a feeling of respect for them because they feel greatly impressed by studies. But the wise readers use the knowledge of the books to their advantage in their daily life. Studies don’t know their own use. It depends on the wise persons and their keen and careful observation. Through their observation they learn how to use them in their life.

सन्दर्भ एवं प्रसंग-प्रस्तुत पंक्तियाँ फ्रांसिस बेकन द्वारा रचित निबन्ध ‘ऑफ स्टडीज’ से ली गयी हैं। इस गद्यांश में लेखक विभिन्न व्यक्तियों के विभिन्न दृष्टिकोणों (अध्ययन के प्रति) का वर्णन करता है।

व्याख्या-लेखक कहता है कि विभिन्न प्रकार के व्यक्ति होते हैं। चतुर व्यक्ति अध्ययन की निन्दा करता है क्योंकि उसके विचार में किताबों से प्राप्त ज्ञान अव्यावहारिक होता है अतः व्यर्थ होता है। मूर्ख व्यक्ति अध्ययन को प्रशंसा की दृष्टि से देखते हैं क्योंकि वे हमेशा अध्ययन से स्वयं को प्रभावित अनुभव करते हैं। लेकिन बुद्धिमान् व्यक्ति किताबों में संग्रहित ज्ञान का प्रयोग निजी जीवन में करते हैं। अध्ययन अपना महत्व नहीं बताता। यह बुद्धिमान् व्यक्तियों पर निर्भर करता है कि वे कैसे अध्ययन को स्वयं के जीवन में प्रयुक्त करें।

Fourth Stanza

Read not to contradict and confute, nor to believe
and take for granted, nor to find talk and discourse,
but to weigh and consider. Some books are to be
tasted, others to be swallowed and some few to be
chewed and digested; that is some books are to be
read only in parts; others to be read but not
curiously; and some few to be read wholly and with
diligence and affection.

Context : The wise readers use the knowledge of the books to their advantage in daily life.

Explanation : Study depends on the wise persons who through their observation learn how to use the teaching of books in their own life. The habit of reading makes a person full of knowledge. The author says that all books are not to be studied in the same way. Bacon advises the readers not to read books to oppose. Studies should develop the ability to comprehend things properly. Books are perfected and developed by experience like natural plants. There are three type of books–some are to be read partially, some are to be read wholly and some are to be read with great care and deliberation followed up with careful concentration to comprehand appreciate and understand the contents and their significance. The readers should try to understand their deep meanings. Bacon believes that books carry their significance in different ways and they should be read accordingly, wide experience.

प्रसंग-अध्ययन व्यक्ति के स्वाभाविक गुणों के विकास में महत्वपूर्ण है। चतुर व्यक्ति अध्ययन से प्राप्त ज्ञान को अपने दैनिक जीवन के लाभ के लिए प्रयोग में लाते हैं।

व्याख्या-अध्ययन के द्वारा मानवीय योग्यताएँ विकसित की जाती हैं। अध्ययन एक प्राकृतिक पौधे के समान है। जिस प्रकार पौधे को नियमित देखभाल की आवश्यकता है, उसी प्रकार अध्ययन के अनुभव से प्रगाढ़ बना सकते हैं। बेकन कहता है कि सभी पुस्तकों को एक ही प्रकार से नहीं पढ़ना चाहिए। बेकन अध्ययनकर्ताओं को सुझाव देता है कि व्यक्ति को केवल विरोध और आलोचना के लिए नहीं पढ़ना चाहिए। मुख्यत: तीन प्रकार की पुस्तकें होती हैं-कुछ आंशिक रूप से पढ़ी जानी चाहिए, कुछ को पूर्ण रूप से पढ़ा जाना चाहिए तथा कुछ को विशेष ध्यान से पढ़ा जाना चाहिए तथा जीवन में ढालना चाहिए। पढ़ने की आदत व्यक्ति को ज्ञान से परिपूर्ण बनाती है। अध्ययन व्यक्ति का चरित्र-निर्माण करती है। पाठकों को इन पुस्तकों को गहराई से उनका अर्थ समझते हुए उनका अध्ययन करना चाहिए। पुस्तकों का भिन्न-भिन्न महत्व होता है और उन्हें उसी के अनुरूप पढ़ना चाहिए।
