Robert Lynd
Life and Works
Robert Lynd was the son of a Presbyterian minister the Rev. R. J. Lynd, D. D. He was born in Belfast (Northern Ireland) in 1879. He was the second child in the family of seven–the eldest, his sister Laura, married Dr. R. M. Jones, who became Robert’s school master. Robert was educated at the Belfast Academical Institution until he went to Queen’s College of which he was made a Litt. D. in 1947. In 1901 he migrated from Balfast to Manchester to make a living with his pen. He was employed there for sometime on Hulton’s paper, the Daily Despatch. He, then moved to London where he, like many other journalists and writers, struggled for his living for many years. In September 1904 he first met his future wife Sylvia Dryhurst, who was destined to become a well-known poet and journalist. They soon fell in love and were married in 1909. His wife prompted him to apply to the Daily News which was looking for a leader writer. As such he was engaged by A. G. Gardiner as an assistant literary editor. It was the first post he had, and he kept it until 1907, when he was asked to abandon his editing but to remain as a contributor of a weekly essay.
During his editorship of the Daily News, he contributed essays and reviews to the Nation and the New Statesman. It was in the latter that the bulk of his work appeared. These weekly essays became one of the most valued features of the paper. From time to time, they were collected in small volumes and published by Methuen. These won him a place alongside of Belloc, Chesterton, and E. V. Lucas among contemporary masters of the short essay. His literary books include Old and New Masters, The Art of Letters, Dr. Johnson and Money Box, Both Sides of the Road, and Life’s Little Oddities. His best essays are the records of his observations and reminiscences. As a master of humour, satire and irony, Lynd has the power to create in his readers a mood of personal sympathy and affection and to delight them with his pleasant anecdotes and stories.
