About the Author –

John Milton is famous throughout the world as the author of the Paradise Lost. His position in English literature is second only to William Shakespeare. He was born in 1608 in a Protestant family of England. He was educated at the Christ’s College. Cambridge. He was very handsome and so he was called the lady of the college. Milton developed a distaste for the formal university education, and so he started his own school. For self improvement and education he travelled throughout Europe from 1638 to 1639. During his travels he met many literary and intellectual giants who influenced his personality and character.

Milton was basically a poet. Poetry was for him a taste of life but he turned to prose with a view to serving the nation. He did not write literary essays of delight like Montaigne, Francis Bacon or Thomas Browne. He wrote forceful essays of thought using arguments and reason to convince and persuade the readers to his own view point. His essays were in the form of pamphlets for the sake of propaganda of his thoughts – a genre unheard of before Milton. Some of the famous pamphlets he wrote are : Of Reformation in England, The Reason of Church Government, The Doctrine and Discipline of Divorce, Of Education, Areopagitica, Tenure of Kings and Magistrates.

Milton was very active in the politics of England and so after the downfall of the Proctectorate he was arrested, But his life was spared because of the influence of Sir William Davenant whom he had helped
during his own powerful days. Milton retired to an obscure village in Buckinghamshire where he died on 8th Nov. 1674.

Milton had become blind ‘ere half his days’ i.e. in the middle of his life. He wrote fine poetry including the famous Paradise Lost after his blindness. He married thrice after the death of his previous wife and had six daughters who wrote for him as he dictated his compositions to them.

लेखक परिचय-

‘पैराडाइज लॉस्ट’ के लेखक के रूप में जॉन मिल्टन विश्व में प्रसिद्ध हैं। अंग्रेजी साहित्य में उसका स्थान केवल शेक्सपियर के बाद दूसरे नम्बर पर आता है। उसका जन्म सन् 1608 में इंग्लैण्ड के एक प्रोटेस्टैन्ट परिवार में हुआ था। उसकी शिक्षा कैम्ब्रिज क्राइस्ट कालेज में हुई थी। वह सुन्दर एवं आकर्षक व्यक्तित्व का धनी था। इसीलिए वह लेडी ऑव दि कालेज’ (कालेज की सुन्दरी) नाम से विख्यात था। मिल्टन को विश्वविद्यालयीय औपचारिक शिक्षा से अरुचि हो गई थी। अतः उसने अपना अलग स्कूल स्थापित करने का विचार किया। आत्मविकास एवं स्वयं शिक्षा के लिए उसने सम्पूर्ण योरोप का दौरा किया। अपनी यात्रा के दौरान उसने उस काल के महान साहित्यकारों एवं विद्वानों से भेट की एवं विचार-विमर्श किया।

मिल्टन मूलतः कवि था। कविता उसके जीवन का रस था, परन्तु उसने राष्ट्र सेवा के उद्देश्य से गद्य में लिखना शुरु किया । उसका उद्देश्य तर्कपूर्ण ओजस्वी शैली में अपने विचार दूसरों तक संप्रेषित करना था। उसने निबंध कला के जनक मॉण्टेन तथा अंग्रेज निबंधकार फ्रैंसिस बेकन तथा टॉमस ब्राउन की भाँति ललित निबंधों की रचना नहीं की, वरन् चिन्तनपूर्ण विचारों से अनुप्राणित ‘प्रचार-लेख’ (पैम्फलेट्स) लिखे। उसके कुछ प्रचार लेख इस प्रकार हैं- इंग्लैण्ड में सुधार, चर्च प्रशासन के तर्क, तलाक का सिद्धान्त एवं अनुशासन, शिक्षा, ऐरोपाजिटिका, राजाओं एवं मजिस्ट्रेटों का कार्यकाल आदि। इस प्रकार के प्रचार लेखों की शुरुआत मिल्टन ने ही की थी।

मिल्टन ने इंग्लैण्ड की राजनीति में सक्रिय भूमिका निभाई थी। परिणामस्वरूप उसके अनुकूल सरकार के पतन के पश्चात उसकी गिरफ्तारी हो गई। किसी प्रकार सर विलियम डवनैन्ट के प्रभाव से उसकी जान बच गई और वह जेल से छूटा। अपने समय में उसने सर डैवनैन्ट की राजनीतिक सहायता की थी जिसका यह सुपरिणाम था। बाद में मिल्टन वकिंघमशायर के एक अल्पज्ञात गाँव में रहने चला गया जहाँ उसकी मृत्यु 8-11-1674 को हो गई।

मिल्टन अपने जीवन के मध्यकाल में ही अन्धा हो गया। अपनी पत्नी के मरने के बाद उसने तीन बार विवाह किया था। अंधे होने के बाद भी उसने कुंवारी लड़कियों से ही विवाह किया था। उसकी छः पुत्रियाँ थी जो विदुषी तो नहीं थी परन्तु उन्होंने ही अपने पिता की रचनाओं को श्रुतलेख के रूप में लिपिबद्ध किया था।
