Summary
The poem ‘La Belle Dame Sans Merci‘ is written in Ballad form. The poem can be divided into two parts. The first part deals with an unknown person asking a disappointed knight about the cause of his sadness while in the second part the knight describes his meeting with a fairy and incidents which have made him unhappy.
Someone asks the knight, who is wondering with pale looks, on the bank of a lake where the grass has become dry and no birds are singing the cause of his trouble. The knight is tired and worn out and he is also full of grief and sorrow. The unknown person further says that the squirrel has collected and stored the grain and the crops have been reaped and gathered then what is the reason which makes the knight wander aimlessly. The kinght’s face was pale and his forehead was covered with sweat revealing that fact that the kinght was in grip of a deep mental pain and fever and his cheeks were losing gradually their freshness and charm. The pitiable condition of the knight makes the person enquire the cause of his misery.
In reply to the question the knight describes his meeting with an extremely beautiful lady with long hair, light fleet and her eyes were full of emotional excitement, in the meadow. The beauty of the lady attracted the kinght and he made a garland, bracelets and gidle of flowers for her. She looked at him in such a way which clearly meant that she loved him and also made a soft, murmuring sound of love towards the knight. Then the knight placed her on his horse and both of rode for long time, and the lady sang a melodious fairy’s song. She then gave him sweet roots to eat and drops of manna, the heavenly food, to drink and in a strange language she expressed her love for him. In the end she wept and sighed for his love. The kinght expressed his love by kissing on her eyes four times. The lady sang sweet songs and put him to sleep. While asleep the knight saw a fearful dream. In his dream he saw the pale, miserable faces of kings, princes and warriors who warned him by saying that he had become a victim of the beautiful lady. This fearful dream made the knight wake up from he sleep and he found himself lying on the cold mountain side. The knight said that was the reason why he was miserable and was wandering aimlessly on the bark of the lake.

हिन्दी साराँश-
‘हृदयहीन सुन्दरी’ नामक कविता “बैलेड” शैली में लिखी गयी है। कविता दो भागों में विभाजित की जा सकती है। प्रथम भाग में कोई अपरिचित व्यक्ति किसी निराश से उसकी उदासी का कारण पूछता है। दूसरे भाग में नाइट अपनी व्यथा कथा सुनाता है कि किस प्रकार उसके भेंट एक परी से हुई और किन घटनाओं के फलस्वरूप वह दुःखी हो गया।
नाइट अपना पीला चेहरा लिए झील के किनारे घूम रहा जहाँ की घास सूख गयी है और जहाँ पक्षी गाना नहीं गा रहे हैं। उस समय नाइट से कोई व्यक्ति उसके दुःख का कारण पूछता है। नाइट बहुत थका हुआ है और दुःख से उसका दिल भरा हुआ है। अपरिचित प्रश्नकर्ता पूछ रहा है कि ऐसे समय में जब गिलहरी ने अपना भण्डार भर लिया है (शीत के दिनों में उपयोग के लिए) और फसल काट ली गयी है और खलिहान भर लिये गये हैं, नाइट निरुद्देश्य क्यों घूम रहा है। नाइट का चेहरा पीला पड़ गया है और उसके माथे पर पसीने की बूंदें नजर आ रही हैं जिससे यह पता चलता है कि नाइट मानसिक कष्ट का अनुभव कर रहा है और उसके कपोल (गाल) अपना आकर्षण और ताजगी खो रहे हैं। नाइट की यह कारुणिक दशा प्रश्नकर्ता को मजबूर कर देती है कि वह नाइट के दुःख दर्द का कारण पूछे।
प्रश्न के उत्तर में नाइट बताता है कि घास के मैदान में उसकी मुलाकात एक अत्यन्त रूपवती स्त्री से हुई थी। उसके लम्बे बाल थे, हल्के पैर थे (वह मन्दगामिनी थी) और उसकी आँखों में जादुई आकर्षण था। स्त्री के सौन्दर्य से आकृष्ट होकर नाइट ने उसके लिए फूलों का हार, बाजूबन्द और मेखला का निर्माण किया। उसने भी नाइट की ओर प्रेम भरी निगाहों से देखा जिससे स्पष्ट था कि वह उससे प्रेम करने लगी थी। उसने नाइट के लिए मन्द मधुर आवाज भी की । तब नाइट ने उसको अपने घोड़े पर बिठा लिया और फिर दोनों बहत दूर तक घोड़े पर घूमें। इस समय स्त्री ने एक मधुर परी गीत गाया। उसने नाइट को खाने के लिए कन्दमूल और पीने के लिए दिव्य पेय दिया और साथ ही असामान्य भाषा में उसके प्रति अपने प्रेम का प्रकटीकरण किया। अन्त में वह उसे अपने परी गुफा में ले गई और उसके प्रेम के लिए स्वयं रोई और आहें भरने लगी। नाइट ने उसके आँखों पर चार चुम्बन अंकित करके अपना प्यार जताया। स्त्री ने मधुर गीत गाकर उसे सुला दिया। सोते समय नाइट ने एक भयानक सपना देखा। स्वप्न में उसने अनेक राजाओं और राजकुमारों के दुःखी और उदास चेहरे देखे। उन सभी ने नाइट को चेतावनी दी कि वह भी उन्हीं की तरह उस हृदयहीन सुन्दरी के मोह में फंस गया है। उस शाम नाइट ने (स्वप्न में) उनके सूखे और प्यासे ओठों को देखा जो खुले हुए थे। इस भयानक सपने को देखकर जब नाइट जागा तो उसने अपने को उस ठंडी पहाड़ी पर अकेले पड़े हुए पाया। नाइट ने बताया कि यही वह कारण है जिसके परिणामस्वरूप वह उस झील के किनारे निरर्थक इधर-उधर भटक रहा है।
