LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM | FEATURES OF LINUX.
LINUX OPERATING SYSTEM
LINUX is also an example of operating system. Linux was developed from UNIX to make the source code available on the internet.
OPERATING SYSTEM is collection of programs, which provides an interface between computer user and computer hardware. Operating system also provides an environment for execution of user programs. Linux is also an example of operating system. Linux was developed from UNIX to make the source code available on the internet. UNIX was developed in 1968 at General Electronics AT & T Bell laboratory. Initially its name is MULTICS (Multiplexed Information Computing System), but in 1969 Ken Thompson and Dennis Ritchie made some changes and gave the name UNIX operating systems UNIX becomes popular with its usasage.
Linux began with this post to the Usenet newsgroup comp.os.minix, in August, 1991, written by a Finnish college student :
Hello everybody out there using minix-
I’m doing a (free) operating system (just a hobby, won’t be big and professional like gnu) for 386 (486) AT clones.
That student, of course, was Linus Torvalds and the ‘hobby’ of which he wrote grew to what is known today as Linux. Version 1.0 of the kernel was released on March 14, 1994. Version 2.2, the current stable kernel release, was officially released on January 25, 1999. Torvalds wrote Linux because he wanted a UNIX-like operating system that would run on his 386. Working from MINIX, Linux was born.
Today, Linux is used by half a million users, and that number keeps growing every day. One reason is cost-Linux itself is free of charge, and only those who package a Linux distribution charge for it. These distributions, such as Red Hat Linux, Mandrake Linux, SUSE Linux vary as to their installation processes and accompanying tools.
FEATURES OF LINUX
Linux is today very popular operating system with following features :
1. Multiuser Operating System : Linux is a Multiuser Operating System, that allow multiple users to run many programs on the same system simultaneously.
2. Multi Tasking Operating System : Linux is also Multi Tasking Operating System, that allow a single user to execute his many programs independently.
3. Multi Programming Operating System : Linux is multi Programming Operating System, which allows multiple program execution at the same time. Multi programming is achieved using time sharing method.
4. Virtual Memory : Linux can use a portion of hard drive as virtual memory, for expanding total amount of available RAM. From the use of virtual memory speed is increased
5. X Window System : The X Window System is the de facto industry standard graphics system for UNIX machines. A complete version of the X Window System, known as XFree 86, is available for Linux. The X Window System is a very powerful graphics interface, supporting many applications.
6. Networking Facility : Linux provides TCP/IP (Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol) support. This is the set of protocols that links millions of university and business computers into a worldwide network known as the Internet. With an Ethernet connection, we can have access to the Internet or to a local area network from Linux system. Using SLIP (Serial Line Internet Protocol) or PPP (Point-to-Point Protocol), Internet can be accessed over the phone lines with a modem.
7. File Security : Linux provides security for files because each user has its own home directory and a user working on Linux operating system can see only his files and directories.
8. Low Cost : Linux is cheaper to get than most commercially available UNIX systems and UNIX clones. If you access to the Internet, the only price you pay for Linux is your time, Linux is freely available on the Internet.
9. GNU Software : Linux supports a wide range of free software written by the GNU Project, including utilities such as the GNU C and CH compiler, gawk, groff, and more. Many of the essential system utilities used by Linux as GNU software.
10. Virus Free : Linux operating system is free from virus, because any virus cannot reach upto administrator level. IS OTT INITY
