Letter To Lord Chesterfield By Samuel Johnson Summary In English And Hindi:-Background to the Letter : Dr. Johnson wrote this letter to Lord Chesterfield in 1755. At that time he was 45 years old.

Dr. Johnson had been writing his famous dictionary for eight years. A coalition of seven London booksellers had commissioned the project eight years previously. Johnson got only £ 1,575, in return of his hard labour. Dr. Johnson wanted some more money. On the advice of a bookseller, he published the plan of the dictionary and dedicated it to Lord Chesterfield in the hope of getting some monetary help from him. He personally visited the Lord but met with disappointment. The Lord helped him with much less money than Johnson had expected.

But when the Dictionary was published after 13 years (delayed by five years), Lord Chesterfield published an advance review of it in a magazine named The World, presenting himself as principal patron of the word. This excited Dr. Johnson’s anger and he wrote the following letter to his Lordship.

My Lord,

I have been recently informed by the proprieter of The World that you wrote two papers to the magazine recommending my Dictionary to the public. This is such a distinguished honour and favour shown by the Great which I am not accustomed of. In other words no Great man ever shown any favour to me. I, therefore, fail to understand how I should receive it and in what terms to acknowledge.

When upon some slight encouragement I first visited your Lordship, I was so enamoured by the beauty of your residence and was so pleased with the idea of meeting you that I considered myself the conqueror of the world. But I was so much neglected there that neither pride nor modesty would suffer me to center it. Once, I addressed you in public, I tried my best to please you with all my oratory, but of no avail. I was ignored and I got nothing.

My Lord, Seven years ago, I waited for you in your outer rooms and I repulsed from there empty handed. There is no use of complaining of these adverse circumstances in which I continued my work during those seven years. Finally, I have brought it to the verge of publication without any assistance, without any encouragement and without any favour. I did not expect such treatment, for I never had a Patron before.

My Lord, Does it suit to a Patron to look with unconcern on a Man struggling for life in the water and when he reaches ground, the patron burdens him with help. I wish you had taken notice of my labours seven years before and been kind to me. Now it has been so much delayed that I am indifferent to it and cannot enjoy it. I am alone and cannot share this honour with my wife who has died, now I am known to the world and I do not need the favour of anyone.

In my opinion, there is no harshness in being cynical to a favour which does not bring any benefit. I am unwilling that the public should consider me as having a Patron, while actually I have none. God alone enabled me to complete my work all alone.

Though, I carried on my work with little obligation to any favourer of the learned man, I shall not be disappointed, if I get the least support and encouragement from them, for I have wakened from that Dream of hope of which I once boasted with utmost joy.

डॉ. जान्सन आठ वर्ष से English Dictionary लिख रहे थे। लन्दन के सात पुस्तक विक्रेताओं ने सामूहिक रूप से इस परियोजना को आठ वर्ष पूर्व डॉ. जान्सन को प्रस्तुत किया था और इसके बदले में उन्हें मात्र £ 1,575 देने का प्रस्ताव किया था। डॉ. जान्सन कुछ अधिक धन चाहते थे, अत: एक पुस्तक विक्रेता के कहने पर उन्होंने Dictionary की योजना प्रकाशित की और उसे Lord Chesterfield को समर्पित किया और Lord Chesterfield से व्यक्तिगत रूप से मिलने भी गए परन्तु उन्हें निराशा ही हाथ लगी। Lord ने डॉ. जान्सन की आशा से बहुत कम धन उनको दिया।

परन्तु जब Dictionary 13 वर्ष बाद (निर्धारित समय से 5 वर्ष बाद) प्रकाशन के लिए तैयार हुई तो Lord Chesterfield ने उससे पूर्व दो पत्र The World पत्रिका में प्रकाशित किये जिसमें उसने स्वयं शब्दकोष का संरक्षक बताया। इससे डॉ. जान्सन को क्रोध आ गया और उन्होंने यह पत्र Lord Chesterfield को लिखा।

मेरे स्वामी,

हाल ही में मुझे The World पत्रिका के Proprieter के द्वारा पता चला है कि आपने पेरे शब्दकोष की सिफारिश जनता से करते हुए दो पत्र प्रकाशित किये हैं। महान् व्यक्तियों द्वारा दिया गया यह ऐसा सम्मान एवं अहसान है जिसका मैं अभ्यस्त नहीं हूँ अर्थात् मेरे प्रति किसी महान् व्यक्ति ने कोई अहसान नहीं किया है। अत: मैं समझ नहीं पा रहा हूँ कि मैं इस सम्मान एवं अहसान को किस प्रकार प्राप्त करूं तथा किन शब्दों में इसे स्वीकार करूँ?

थोड़े से उत्साहवर्धन पर जब मैं प्रथम बार आपके निवास पर आपसे मिलने गया था तो मैं आपके निवास के सौन्दर्य से इतना अभिभूत हुआ था तथा इतना प्रसन्न हुआ था कि मैंने स्वयं को विश्व विजेता का विजेता समझा था। परन्तु वहाँ जिस प्रकार मेरी उपेक्षा हुई उससे अभिमान और न ही मेरी विनीतता इतनी पीड़ित (आहत) हुई कि मैं इसको सहन नहीं कर सका। एक बार जब मैंने आपने सार्वजनिक रूप से सम्बोधित किया था तो आपकी प्रशंसा में मैंने अपनी सारी योग्यता समाप्त कर दी थी परन्तु उस समय भी मेरी उपेक्षा ही हुई तथा मुझे कुछ भी प्राप्त नहीं हुआ था।

श्रीमान सात वर्ष बीत गये जब मैंने आपके बाहरी कक्षों (कमरों) में आपकी प्रतीक्षा की थी तथा मुझे आपके द्वार से खाली हाथ लौटा दिया गया था। इन सात वर्षों में मैंने किन विपरीत परिस्थितियों में अपना कार्य जारी रखा उसकी शिकायत करना व्यर्थ है और अन्ततः में उसको प्रकाशन की अवस्था में बिना किसी की सहायता के, बिना किसी के उत्साहवर्द्धन के तथा बिना किसी के अहसान के ले आया हूँ। ऐसे व्यवहार की मुझे अपेक्षा नहीं थी क्योंकि मेरा पूर्व में कभी भी कोई संरक्षक नहीं था।

श्रीमान्, क्या संरक्षक ऐसा ही होता है कि जब कोई व्यक्ति पानी (सागर) में जीवन के लिए संघर्ष कर रहा होता है तो उसकी कोई चिन्ता नहीं करता है परन्तु जब वह भूमि पर पहुँच जाता है तो उस पर अपना सहायता का बोझ लाद देता है। आपने आज जो मेरे श्रम का संज्ञान लिया है, काश यह पहले लिया होता और आप मेरे प्रति दयावान होते। अब इसमें इतना विलम्ब हो गया है कि ये इसके प्रति विमुख हूँ तथा इसका आनन्द नहीं ले सकता हूँ। मैं अब अकेला हूँ तथा इस सम्मान को दूसरों को बता नहीं सकता, मुझे अब लोग जानते हैं तथा अब मुझे इसकी आवश्यकता नहीं है।

मेरे विचार में किसी ऐसे अहसान की निन्दा करना जिससे कोई लाभ प्राप्त न हुआ हो, कोई तीक्ष्णता नहीं है। मैं इस बात के लिए अनिच्छुक हूँ कि लोग यह समझें कि मेरा कोई संरक्षक है। ईश्वर ने मुझे स्वयं इस योग्य बना दिया कि मैंने स्वयं अपना कार्य पूर्ण कर लिया।

विद्वानों के बिना किसी अहसान के मैंने अब तक अपना कार्य जारी रखा है। यदि उनका थोड़ा-सा भी प्रोत्साहन एवं समर्थन मुझे प्राप्त होता है तो मैं निराश नहीं होऊँगा, क्योंकि मैं अब आशा के उस स्वप्न से जाग गया हूँ जिसकी मैं अत्यन्त प्रसन्नता के साथ गौरवान्वित बातें किया करता है।
